Kakegurui Season 3 is a necessity simply because the anime left fans hanging in the middle of the election storyline and Kakegurui Twin was just a spin-off prequel. But how long will audiences have to wait for anime production committees to take the risk?

Although Kakegurui XX felt like it ended halfway through the story of an entire season, it turns out there was a very good reason animation studio MAPPA ended the story that way. The anime simply caught up with the story from the source material, which means Kakegurui XXX 2019 could not get the green light for production quickly unless the anime drew on a lot of filler episodes and anime original content.

Thankfully, in early 2023, Anime Geek predicts that there are barely enough manga chapters available to create Kakegurui Season 3. (See the Predictions section below for more details.)

The second major obstacle is financial. Kakegurui XX was actually a surprise as sales of the first season’s Blu-ray/DVD box sets essentially plummeted in 2017 as the first volume sold fewer than 1,000 in its first week.

Regardless, it’s possible that simply being a popular Netflix exclusive is enough to extend the anime TV show Kakegurui XXX. Years ago, Blu-Ray/DVD sales were the main source of revenue for the anime industry, but in recent years, streaming revenue has become the critical factor in an anime’s success.

With Netflix’s support, it’s entirely possible that Kakegurui Season 3 could be produced. When Netflix obtains an international license for an anime, the season is often released on Netflix Japan when episodes air on Japanese TV channels.

Then the international release will come out within six months after the anime released its final episode in Japan.

Netflix’s Kakegurui Season 2 is sticking to this historic release schedule. Kakegurui XX first aired in Japan from January 2019 and the ending, episode 12, was released on March 27, 2019. The release date of Kakegurui XX on Netflix US was June 13, 2019.

  • Updated May 24, 2019: Added Netflix’s confirmation of the release date of Kakegurui XX for international audiences.

This article contains everything that is known about Kakeguirui Season 3 and all related news. As such, this article will be updated with news, rumors, and analysis over time. In the meantime, let’s get into what’s known for sure.

Kakegurui season 3 release date predictions

Until the last update, the animation studio MAPPA or any company related to the production of the anime has not officially confirmed the release date of Kakegurui Season 3. The production of a sequel was also not announced.

Once the news is officially confirmed, this article will be updated with the relevant information. In the meantime, it’s possible to speculate as to when or if the Kakegurui XXX premiere date will happen in the future.

When Kakegurui XX was first announced in 2017, only three manga volumes were released. By 2018, the manga was up to volume 10, but even with five volumes (and presumably the creator’s notes) available as starting material to work with MAPPA, stuff eventually came to be relied on.

Therefore, it can be concluded that unless a decision is made to deviate from the manga entirely, the manga must reach at least Volume 15 for a third season to be produced. The waiting game might be preferred by some fans rather than ending up with yet another anime that deviates completely from its source material.

New manga chapters are released monthly, and new volumes are released about 2-3 times a year. Since Kakegurui Volume 16 came out in September 2022, it seems possible that Kakegurui Season 3 could be announced in the future.

The biggest obstacle is that the early 2023 election story arc was still unresolved. It’s possible that the producers will hold off until the manga provides a good stopping point for the anime.

Kakegurui manga versus Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler anime

The story of the anime Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler is based on the manga series Kakegurui by author Homura Kawamoto and illustrator Toru Naomura.

The manga, which started in 2014, will be published in Square Enix’ Gangan Joker and the books are up to volume 16 until September 22, 2022.

Kakegurui Chapter 96, which will be included in Volume 17, started a new storyline about the past of Souko Jabami, Yumeko’s sister.

As of 2015, a spin-off began serialization. The prequel, named Kakegurui Twin, tells the story of Mary Saotome a year before Yumeko Jabami transferred to Hyakkaou Private Academy. The manga also spawned a four-panel comedy spin-off (4-Koma) in 2017.

The official English translation of the main series is published by Yen Press. Thankfully, it’s not too far behind the Japanese language release. Volume 16 of the English manga will be released by May 23, 2023.

Anime adaptations of manga series often rearrange the order of events, but in the case of the Kakegurui manga adaptation, the anime drew on a lot of original content.

For the ending of Season 1, original creator Kawamoto wrote Season 1, Episode 12, in which Yumeko played directly against Student Council President Kirari Momobami to create a final confrontation that provided a sort of plot resolution.

With the exception of the ending, the first season followed the manga pretty closely.

Volume 5: Chapter 27 and Season 1 Episode 11 both ended with Kaede losing both 10 billion yen and his council seat when he put his entire life plan on the line.

Similarly, Kakegurui XX stayed true to the manga to the end, but the order of events was changed.

For example, the title for Season 2, Episode 6, The Hollywood Star, is taken from Chapter 56 of Volume 10. Then you have Season 2, Episode 10, The Logical Girl, whose title is taken from Chapter 33 of Volume 6. In the middle that all episodes 7 and 8 covered chapters 45 to 49.

Rei Batsubami is a fully anime original character who appears to have been introduced solely to provide an original story for Kakegurui XX episodes 11 and 12.

Oddly enough, Batsubami’s backstory was squeezed into a single episode, despite the character being one of the most interesting characters this season.

Worse, the grand finale ended with a coin toss rather than a more interesting gamble, meaning Batsubami’s story ended on a disappointing ending that didn’t feel impactful.

This left Kakegurui XX feeling like it had ended the show on filler material as the main plot involving the choice remained unresolved.

Still, Studio has to give MAPPA points for working well with a bad hand. When the ending of Kakegurui XX aired in Japan, even the manga had not yet completed the election story.

Hence, one could argue that the second season created the conditions for Kakegurui season 3 while buying time until the manga has enough content for a new season.

Unfortunately, anime fans will have to wait until the Kakegurui Season 3 release date to see what happens next. Stay tuned!
