Debra Winger’s decision to retire from her storied Hollywood career stunned many, but for Winger, the choice was easy. Her final credit before saying goodbye to Tinsel Town was in the 1995 romantic comedy Forget Paris, after which she quickly neared a career crossroads. The year before, she confessed to The New York Times that she felt like she was “in the twilight of my career.” She told The Guardian of that time in her life: “I had hit 40 too, which is a point in life where it can get really tough in Hollywood. I looked around and thought it’s time to go.”

From Winger’s point of view, she never quite left Hollywood, but “just hit the pause button” at increasingly unfulfilled acting opportunities (via People). Winger told People, “The parts that came didn’t interest me … My life challenged me more than the parts, so I totally immersed myself in it.” In her time off the mainstream in Hollywood, Winger’s life has been busy, as has she told the Los Angeles Times, “I had a baby, my mother died, I taught, I did two plays. I’ve lived my life.”
