A little detail about Amy and Raj that some The Big Bang Theory fans have noticed is that the former always addresses the latter by his full first name, Rajesh, although no one else does. In a discussion thread on the r/bigbangtheory subreddit, several users debated why Amy would be so formal with Raj despite the couple having been in the same friend group for years. “I think the formality is partly a holdover from her upbringing,” commented u/ll_Maurice_ll. “She probably thinks she’s more polite.”
Such an explanation would be consistent with Amy’s general characterization as a socially reserved person, who occasionally has a sharp quote. However, another user made a less palatable suggestion regarding her and Raj’s interactions. “They’re not friends, they just happen to be in the same group of friends,” commented u/Jalex2321.
It’s true that Amy and Raj don’t seem to have as close a friendship as the couple has with other characters. The cast members seem to have a close bond in real life, however, as Kunal Nayyar and his original cast mates voluntarily took a pay cut in 2017 to boost Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch’s salaries. “I’m pleased to report that we have a very cohesive cast and we all know that our strength lies together,” Bialik said in an interview with People (via Yahoo Sports). The actress added that they “all really know each other love”.
