In an interview with Esquire after the season 1 finale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, JD Payne spoke about the grand twist that Sauron and Halbrand are one and the same. As he explained, this shocking revelation did not come out of absolute darkness. Rather, it actually comes from JRR Tolkien’s literary works. The Quotes “I perceive the dark lord and know his thoughts, or all his thoughts, concerning the elves. And he’s always groping to see me and my thoughts a queen would have,” from Galadriel, was all he and the team needed.
As Payne told the publication, “All of these things spoke to a long history with the Darkness and Sauron in particular. So we asked, ‘Would we like to explore some sort of relationship between them?’” With that concept in mind and the fact that Sauron can take many different forms, the Rings of Power crew confronted it. They filled in the details of how Sauron and Galadriel would meet, how the Dark Lord would act during his great deception, and other important details. Thus the version of him we see under his semi-rimmed alias (that’s not canon for the Middle-earth books) was born.
Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is on the way, although it can’t come soon enough. One can only hope it reveals more about Sauron and further explores Halbrand’s fractured relationship with Galadriel.
