Why Longtime Magnum PI Fans Have A Problem With The Reboot’s Higgins

Although the central premise remains the same, the Magnum PI reboot is loaded with some notable changes compared to the original. But perhaps the most drastic difference is Higgins’ character. Instead of a WWII veteran, the character is Juliet Higgins (Perdita Weeks), a younger blonde, highly qualified M16 agent. In all honesty, the only real resemblance between them and Jonathan Higgins is that they are British nationals and that they are both owners of the estate of Magnum’s main benefactor. In fact, with her agent background and use of the latest gadgets, Juliet probably has more in common with James Bond.

The reboot might have used this as an attempt to reimagine an old character, but some fans of the first ’80s show just didn’t have it. “Higgins was supposed to be an older British military figure with lots of 20th century British military anecdotes…” wrote one user. Another fan agreed with this view, adding that the revamped character could have been played by a different older actor portraying a recent war veteran instead of a former government agent with intense martial arts skills. If anything, the move to Higgins seems to have reassured longtime fans that the reboot doesn’t have the same chemistry found in Selleck and Hillerman’s take on the characters. “The new series doesn’t seem to give any depth to the characters and their backstories seem there just to have them and try to emulate the original, which u/withallduedifference wrote.
