At a recent press event for Lightyear, Taika Waititi was asked what he thought about how Pixar makes its films after being a part of Lightyear.
Waititi first highlighted what he appreciated most about the studio, noting, “I think especially with Pixar, it’s the relentless pursuit of a perfect story.” Taika went on to explain that he often returns to many different Pixar animated films, not just for his own personal entertainment, but to study how these projects are structured. Noting that Pixar “annoyingly gets it right every time,” Waititi concluded by saying that he’s not afraid to admit that he tears down Pixar’s methods and structure when he looks at his own filmmaking simply because it inspires him.
Although Waititi is already an accomplished filmmaker, whether or not he draws on ideas from Pixar films, he told Interview Magazine in 2012 that he never really expected to become one. Actually, he liked art and painting more, but also loved comedy and acting. Making movies was just something he did, but when “Boy” started winning awards, he “accidentally got a job.” In any case, fans will soon see great examples of Waititi’s talent as an actor in Lightyear and as a filmmaker in Thor: Love and Thunder.
