The most recent role for Iman Benson was as Drea Barris, the teenage daughter of Kenya Barris (plays a fictional version of herself) and Joya Barris (plays Rashida Jones) on Netflix’s #blackAF. The show explored the trials and tribulations of a black family who recently got rich. Humor and insight were common themes of the series in what Netflix described as Barris’ “disrespectful, highly flawed, incredibly honest approach to parenting, relationships, race and culture” (per IndieWire). Although the show mixed drama with humor, it also contained many reminders of Barris’ penchant for loud comedy on his other sitcom, Black-ish, which he also drew on his life experiences.

When asked what her favorite Harper’s Bazaar scenes were in 2020, Benson replied, “I think for me, my favorite scenes were anything that was vulnerable experiences. Another thing would be interviews I did specifically with Kenya. I felt like they were spaces where he and I were vulnerable together. Whether that was because he had experiences or just experiences I’ve had in my life, I’ve reflected that through Drea’s character.”

With that in mind, it’s probably not surprising that Benson explored vulnerability and her own life reflections to great effect in The Midnight Club.
