The Winchester brothers’ most non-toxic parent figure has some of the healthiest roots. Since Bobby is the father Sam and Dean never had, inspiration for the character was rooted in characters that Supernatural creator Eric Kripke looked up to. Speaking at PaleyFest 2011, Kripke revealed that Bobby was a combination of two important people in his life (via Eclipse Magazine). Producers Bob Singer and Kim Manners were instrumental in Kripke’s education in the entertainment industry. He looked up to them as father figures and it was from them that Bobby Singer was born. But the character’s name went through several variations.
“[T]The character’s name was originally “Bobby Manners”. But when the name came under forensic review, they said there was a real “Bobby Manners” who lived in South Dakota. And if the legal department finds something like that, they have to change the name,” Kripke explained on the panel. “So I made it ‘Singer.’ And Bob, to his eternal chagrin, wasn’t there that day. And when he came back he was like, ‘What the hell is that?!’” Those who look at the credits of “Supernatural” will already know that the character of Bobby Singer bears the executive producer’s name. The real Robert Singer will now forever be associated with one of the most significant characters in the series.
