Pixar cast Hollywood legend – and father of MCU veteran Josh Brolin – James Brolin to play Zurg, in only his second turn as a voice talent in a career that has spanned 141 acting credits. The other only starred as the narrator in the charming Netflix adaptation of the comic series Sweet Tooth last year. Though he may just be a cadet in the recording booth, his screen career is naturally credited with some of the most seminal entries in their relevant genre, which, like Buzz Lightyear himself, are revisited decades later.
In 1973, he starred opposite Richard Benjamin and Yul Brynner in Westworld, which finally received a modern polish in 2016 when it was rebooted as a TV series on HBO, albeit without Brolin. In 1979, the actor petrified audiences by starring opposite Margot Kidder in The Amityville Horror, which was rebooted in 2005 and starred an up-and-coming Ryan Reynolds.
While Brolin’s time on this evil piece of real estate proved he could go bad if he had to, Pixar was understandably looking for a slightly more family-friendly villain for “Lightyear,” and he had to look no further than his own son’s performance as a stone-obsessed space tyrant, in order to achieve it.
