Who Plays The TV Dad In Progressive’s Sitcom-Inspired Campaign?
Reginald VelJohnson portrays the TV dad in Progressive’s latest campaign. One ad features a father and son discussing insurance, only for TV Dad to intervene with a laugh and some great lighting. Another commercial formatted as an intro sequence presents the character as a typical sitcom father figure. As the jingle notes, TV Dad is a cute, smart problem solver. He jokes with the neighborhood kids, greets everyone with a smile, and despite his best efforts, gets into crazy situations. The message is clear: he’s reliable, just like Progressive.
The TV dad has traits of an archetype VelJohnson helped build over the nine seasons he played patriarch Carl Winslow on the sitcom Family Matters. Viewers could always count on Carl to roll their eyes at Steve Urkel’s (Jaleel White) antics, a story that subtly reinforces the commercial’s core message. Beyond his sitcom days, VelJohnson is also known for playing Sergeant Al Powell in Die Hard. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he has played a cop numerous times throughout his career, although he doesn’t mind being typecast.
“I don’t know what’s up with me and this cop thing, but I get a lot of cop offers,” the actor told the outlet. “Everyone always assumes I’m someone from the police, but as long as they pay me, I’ll play a cop until I die.”
