From a young age, Riley Lai Nelet made a name for herself as an actress in high-concept sci-fi television. In addition to one-off roles in episodes of American Housewife and Generation, Nelet had a significant supporting role in the Netflix series Altered Carbon. Based on the book of the same name, the series uses the sci-fi lens to explore resonant themes that are becoming increasingly relevant today. In this futuristic society, people can transfer their consciousness into other bodies known as “sleeves”. This allows characters like protagonist Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman) to essentially live forever. One of these most impressive sleeve users is Reileen, played by Dichen Lachman as an adult.
Like many compelling antagonists, Reileen has an elaborate backstory that makes her situation even more tragic. Nelet plays Reileen as a child who never really had a chance to adjust well. Traumatized by her father, Reileen is eventually sold to the yakuza and climbs the crime ladder. Altered Carbon has a lot of dark spots, and these flashbacks are certainly among the darkest. With Altered Carbon already under her belt and Paper Girls on the way, Riley Lai Nelet seems poised to take genre TV by storm.
