In a career spanning three decades, Sara Rue has amassed over 60 acting credits to her name. Although she has appeared in several films, including Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor, the romantic drama A Slipping-Down Life, and the teen rom-com Can’t Hardly Wait, Rue’s career has been primarily in television. with roles in popular sitcoms such as Will & Grace, Less Than Perfect, Rules of Engagement, Two and a Half Men, Mom and B Positive.
However, Rue’s most famous TV role was in the teen romantic dramedy Popular, in which she starred as the unpopular girl Carmen Ferrara. Although the show only lasted two seasons, it gained such a cult following over the years that Entertainment Weekly included it in its list of “The 26 Best Cult TV Shows of All Time.”
In 2015, Rue hosted an “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit to promote TV-Land sitcom Impastor, in which she played Dora Winston. A fan asked in a since-deleted comment if she predicted “Popular” would gain a cult following (via AMA). The actress hinted that she didn’t and was simply hoping teenagers would enjoy the show, not expecting it to reach new audiences.
“The fact that people still come up to me. Even teenagers come up to me now and say, ‘I loved ‘Popular’!’ and I’m like ‘You’re 13, how did you even see it?’ and they’re like, ‘Duh, DVDs,'” Rue explained. “It’s amazing how much the show appealed to people, but I think it gave a voice to certain types of kids who did it [trouble] speak for themselves at the time.”
