Detective Tommy Killian, played by Kevin Rankin, is old school – “Irish police officer’s bar owner” old school, “officer who denies a suspect his right to a lawyer and then lies about it on the witness stand” old school. He’s the kind of wise gun that’s been the focus of countless police cases and movies over the decades. However, he’s not the main character here, and he’s definitely not the hero. To Regina, he’s a liability, a relic of the old way of doing things, and his disobedience and anger at being called out for his behavior mean there could be a reckoning between the two sooner rather than later.

Born in Louisiana, Rankin got his start in the late 1990s when he first appeared in a wordless performance as a dying young man in Robert Duvall’s The Apostle. He’s worked non-stop ever since, building a solid résumé of corrupt cops, neo-Nazis, and various villains and henchmen. Even when he’s not playing an explicit criminal, like in Judd Apatow’s underrated 2002 college sitcom Undeclared, he often plays jerks and various nuisances. In the 2010s, he made his mark as a prestigious TV mudguard, playing Kentucky henchman Devil on FX’s Justified and neo-Nazi Kenny on the final season of Breaking Bad. Rankin also flexed his villain muscles on the first season of 2016’s Lucifer and TNT’s nail salon crime drama Claws.
