If you’re interested in becoming a One Chicago purist, the best way to immerse yourself in Dick Wolf’s franchise is to watch the shows in chronological order. That means you start your journey with Chicago Fire, then Chicago PD, and finally Chicago Med — with one caveat we’ll explain in a moment.

The franchise first launched with Chicago Fire, which serves as the anchor for nearly every subsequent series. The series focuses on the trials and tribulations of Firehouse 51 of the Chicago Fire Department. As firefighters, you naturally meet various other public sector workers, such as the police. “Chicago Fire” had its first backdoor pilot in the form of Season 1 Episode 23 entitled “Let Her Go” which served as the intro for “Chicago PD”. To get the full backstory of Chicago Med, fans must watch Season 3 Episode 19 of Chicago Fire titled I Am the Apocalypse which introduced viewers to the Doctors of the One Chicago world.

Watch each backdoor pilot of “Chicago Fire” and then keep watching each show until you hit the crossovers. There have been several crossovers since the franchise debuted. The crossovers can be difficult to watch, and series creator Wolf also admits they can be a pain to make. “Most of the time – no one likes doing the crossovers. It’s terrible. They shoot on Saturdays; it’s very complicated and there’s always a lot more reshoots,” the Hotshot creator told reporters during a conference call (via CinemaBlend).
