Actress, speaker and trainer Maggie Roswell has achieved a lot in her long career, but the most important for our purposes is her performance in Pretty in Pink. There, she played gym teacher Mrs. Dietz, who has the thankless job of arguing a bevy of high school teenagers while trying to keep them from verbally tearing themselves apart.
Roswell had numerous “She Looks Familiar” roles on classic sitcoms of the ’70s and ’80s, including 1980’s cult classic “Midnight Madness.” However, it was a guest appearance on “The Tracey Ullman Show” that led to her immortal voice in The Simpsons. Roswell has lent her talent and voice to portray Elizabeth Hoover, Maude Flanders, Helen Lovejoy, Luann Van Houten, Martha Quimby, Sharry Bobbins and countless other Springfielders.
When she and her family left Los Angeles for Colorado, a salary dispute forced her to leave the show, and in return “The Simpsons” killed Maude Flanders. She told the Denver Post that “the cast was as shocked by my death as I was.” Since then, fences have been mended between all parties, and her tally of The Simpsons now totals well over 250 episodes.
