What Only True Fans Know About The Superhero Series

One of the most striking differences between Teen Titans and any other superhero cartoon is that its characters have no real interest in maintaining secret identities — that is, if they ever had one in the first place. Raven and Starfire are just Raven and Starfire. Robin, Beast Boy and Cyborg are said to be Dick Grayson, Garfield Logan and Victor Stone, but they live 24/7 as superheroes. The team rarely, if ever, changes their costumes and don’t need a personal home as they all live in Titans Tower.

“It was really important to me that little kids looking at it could relate to characters,” co-creator Glen Murakami explained in a 2004 interview (via Titans Tower). “And I thought once you start giving them secret identities, kids wouldn’t be able to project onto the characters anymore.” The goal was to make the main characters truly iconic, drawing on their essence as the cheerful alien, biting goth -Girl or silly shapeshifter have been reduced.

This led to an interesting problem for die-hard DC fans: which Robin is the Robin from Teen Titans? Many different characters have taken the mantle over the years, from Jason Todd to Stephanie Brown. Dick Grayson is said to be the Robin in question – he even appears as Nightwing in the possible future seen in How Long is Forever? – but he definitely has a pinch of Tim Drake’s panache.
