The Rick and Morty Season 6 trailer starts straight away with Rick Sanchez and Jerry Smith (Chris Parnell) crouching and wielding futuristic weapons. Rick then comments that it’s time to get in on the fight and says he’s going to need a soundtrack. Rick asks his sentient car to play his favorite playlist, starting with track one, and Classic Rock starts playing. The trailer then shows robots, a “die hard” situation in the intergalactic arcades Blips and Chitz, cybernetic transformations, lots of gunfights, explosions and other completely outrageous scenes. However, what is the song Rick requested that plays throughout the trailer?

The song turns out to be none other than Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid,” taken from the 1970 album of the same name. The most famous member of Black Sabbath and its singer is of course Ozzy Osbourne, who is known as the bat eater. According to NPR, this Black Sabbath song and album helped propel heavy metal to the forefront of pop culture, with musician Angel Deradoorian describing the lyrics to “Paranoid”: “They’re simple, but very universal in what they do.” they tell . You are against the war. They are anti-establishment. It’s about being honest with the darkness that surrounds us all in the world.”

Considering the nature of Rick in “Rick and Morty” and the quote above, this song fits the show’s story perfectly. Rick is staunchly anti-establishment, so much so that he doesn’t even trust a government made up of different versions of himself. That doesn’t even delve into his longstanding feud with the Galactic Federation. Nobody tells Rick Sanchez what to do, which makes a song like “Paranoid” absolutely perfect as a background track.
