In addition to the Billy Wilder films and various horror films in preparation for Werewolf by Night, have you also looked at the work of make-up greats such as Jack Pierce or Bud Westmore or Milicent Patrick, who designed the Creature from the Black Lagoon ?

When I first came into our industry, I was mentoring someone who had been around for a long time and had been in the film business since the ’60s. Over time I have navigated myself to a collision of inspirations. I love looking at old makeup, old monster makeup and their techniques. Sometimes because we’ve moved so far away – we’ve got Ultra HD and all that stuff to contend with – we’ve forgotten all those old-fashioned techniques that are really useful, especially when we’re doing things handy or on the fly , something we do not expect.

At the same time, looking at makeup from KNB, everyone has something to bring, be it old techniques, new ones, [or] visionary makeups. I appreciate them all. As a makeup artist, while you’re curating yourself as a person and as an artist, it’s important to take little pieces here and there from all of these people who have inspired you along the way.

Also, we can’t discount Rick Baker’s posts!

Oh, this guy? [laughs]

Aside from your work on this project, do you have a personal favorite black and white movie monster? Is there a specific character, Frankenstein’s Monster, Dracula, the Wolfman, or the Bride of Frankenstein that you absolutely love?

i love dracula I’ve seen so many reruns of this character and read books like The Tomb of Dracula – I love all of that stuff. I like to see people playing Dracula and I like to see different makeups of vampires. It’s very interesting.

Does your love have roots in Bela Lugosi’s Dracula?

Absolutely, except I love all versions of Dracula. I look forward to seeing some of the new vampire stuff that KNB is doing because they did the work on Interview with the Vampire that’s coming out. I’m also looking forward to Nic Cage as Dracula [in “Renfield”].
