We Finally Know The Real Reason Black Adam Wasn’t In Shazam!

According to Dwayne Johnson, the real reason he wasn’t in “Shazam!” was because he felt it would be an “incredible disadvantage” for Warner Bros. for the Black Adam character to simply fit the ancient Egyptian’s origin story into a film about another DC superhero – and his main competitor, no less . Johnson even went so far as to call the studio himself, reportedly voicing his frustration personally.

“I was on the phone,” he explained to Variety. “I said, ‘I have to share my thoughts here. It’s very unpopular…’ because everyone was like, ‘Hey, this script is great, let’s make this movie.’ I said, ‘I really think you ‘Shazam!’ should do, should do this film alone in the tone you want. And I think we should separate that too.'” According to Johnson, the first-ever screenplay for “Shazam!” challenged Black Adam and Shazam to both share the big screen together in a film, each with their respective origin stories, but under the “Shazam!” banner.

“When the first draft of the film came to us, it was a combination of Black Adam and Shazam: Two origin stories in one film,” Johnson said. “Well, that was the goal – so it wasn’t a total surprise. But when I read that, I just knew in my gut, ‘We can’t do this movie like this. We would be doing Black Adam an incredible disservice. ‘ It would have been fine for Shazam to have two origin stories converge in one film, but not good for Black Adam.”

Interestingly, Levi has said that he actually thought Johnson would derail his “Shazam!” Solo film rather than giving the actor his own spotlight. “I didn’t think I’d even have a chance of getting this job,” Levi explained on Dan Fogler’s 4D Xperience show on YouTube in 2020.[Johnson] has already been cast as Black Adam; I knew enough to know that Captain Marvel/Shazam and Black Adam were basically lookalikes, just with a slightly different color scheme and haircut. I was like, ‘Nobody’s going to hire me to be The Rock’s twin. Don’t think that’s going to work.'”
