Aging is the major risk factor for most common neurodegenerative diseases, which include mild cognitive impairment, dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, cerebrovascular disease, and many more. There are more studies conducted that focused on the disease of aging. There are few informative observations from molecular studies of the aging brain. The results also suggest that the aging of the brain is due to several structural, chemical, and functional changes in the brain as well as a host of neurocognitive changes. The results also show that as the organism age, there are distinct changes in the expression of the genes at the single level of neuron level.
Watching Television Can Cause The Aging Of The Brain
As it is known that even though watching television can increase the level of alertness in a person, but it will definitely affect the functioning of the left side of the brain. The left side of the brain is the major part of the human brain, which helps in verbal, analytical, and orderly thinking when compared with the right side of the brain. As per the data collected from the English Longitudinal Study of Aging of 3,662 adults who were 50 years old, the verbal and reasoning skill were monitored. After watching TV for 3.5 hours daily, they found out that watching TV can decrease verbal memory by around 4 to 5 percent for people who watched TV for more than 3.5 hours a day.
As per another report, it is observed that middle-aged folk who watch TV for entertainment are at a higher risk to get their reasoning and memory later in life. Researchers also found out that regular viewing of TV will also affect the performance of cognitive tests as the people aged and they also observed they experienced greater brain atrophy. It is still not clear that is the cause of this is the TV itself or if it is the amount of sedentary couch time people accumulate while watching television. The professor at Columbia University mentioned that it is not necessary that just by watch television causes brain damage, but it may be a proxy measure of sedentary behavior.
All three studies were presented to the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle, and Cardiometabolic. The results also suggest that prolonged sedentary behavior could eventually rob people of brainpower. Palta’s study involved nearly 6500 people who used to watch television for a period of six-year period in the mid-1980s to mid-1990s.
The people were placed into different groups where people who never watched TV and people who sometimes watched TV and people who frequently watched TV. These people were kept under observation and underwent a series of brain performance tests as they grew older to track the changes in their abilities. It was found out that the people who watched very little and no television experienced fewer cognitive tests and were found more focused and better, whereas people who watched more television had a greater than 7% decline in cognitive function over 15 years.
A second study that used ARIC data but that focused on 970 people with relatively stable TV viewing habits underwent scans to check the changes in their brain structure. Researchers also found out the people who watch less or frequently television had a lesser amount of deep gray matter more than a decade later in life, which indicates that greater brain atrophy or deterioration as per the reports of the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama. The main functions of gray brain matter are that the muscle is involved in muscle control, vision, hearing, decision-making, and other important brain functions. The more volume of gray matter in a person’s brain, the better their ability to remember and reason typically.
