Wakanda Forever’s Tenoch Huerta Had Some Technical Difficulties On His Call With Ryan Coogler

Speaking with Jimmy Kimmel on the set of his late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Huerta revealed that his first conversation with writer-director Ryan Coogler got off to a rather awkward start. The actor told Kimmel that when the “Creed” director got on a Zoom call to discuss the role of Namor with Coogler, he started talking about a shaman and a gift of magic — before the call for five minutes was interrupted. As so many of us have experienced as a result of the global shift to remote work and education, video calls can often freeze unexpectedly without either side realizing that something went wrong.

That seems to be the case here, as Huerta’s retelling makes it seem like Coogler didn’t even notice the technical glitch — not that the actor wanted to correct him. Understandably embarrassed and concerned at asking one of Hollywood’s biggest directors to repeat several minutes of Marvel lingo, Huerta pretended he heard Coogler’s speech in full.

After the call, he called his “team” (probably a combination of agents, managers, and PR experts) to give them the progress of the call. When Huerta revealed he had accepted the role despite not hearing much of the call, his team panicked and quickly set up a meeting between Huerta and producer Nate Moore. Moore called Huerta and explained the character again to make sure Huerta knew what he was getting himself into — but at that point, missing five minutes of the first conversation was the least of his worries.
