Vermithor, House Of The Dragon’s Unexpected Visitor From The Finale, Explained

Read Time:1 Minute, 4 Second

To understand the meaning of Vermithor, nicknamed The Bronze Fury for his distinctive bronze skin, you must first recognize the fact that its first rider was none other than King Jaehaerys Targaryen I (Michael Carter) – whom we are seeing for the first time in Episode 1 a flashback to the great council of AD 101 in which he named Viserys Targaryen I (Paddy Considine) his heir.

Book readers will know that Vermithor hatched from an egg laid in Jaehaerys’ cradle as an infant, and that an adult Jaehaerys claimed Vermithor for himself sometime before the year 48 AD (via a Wiki of Ice and Fire) . Vermithor remained at King Jaehaerys’ side until the king’s death in AD 103. At this point, Vermithor fled to a cave within the volcano known as the Dragonmont. Since then, Vermithor has bred there throughout the reign of King Viserys I, and when we meet it in The House of the Dragon it is nearly 100 years old.

The books state that only Vhagar and Balerion the Black Dread (Aegon the Conqueror’s dragon) were taller than Vermithor, making him the second largest dragon in House of the Dragon and an important weapon for the Blacks – should they successfully claim him for their side.
