Exact mechanisms were not the subject of this research and are still unknown; nonetheless, the maturation of brainstem components such as the hypothalamus and neurotransmitter system underpins both mental performance and sleep/wake cycle regulation.

A mixture of qualitative and quantitative sleep assessment methods is important for future study, especially in longitudinal studies of both quantitive components of sleep and child development.

Based on the existing literature, it is not viable to infer strong causal linkages between the two from cross-sectional studies. For future research, we propose using a trajectory design that better reflects maturation and dynamic growth, especially in children.
