This Is How Netflix’s Wednesday Differs From Previous Wednesdays

Read Time:1 Minute, 22 Second

One of the most interesting things that sets this Netflix version of Wednesday Addams apart from its predecessors is that it initially largely disdains her parents’ very obviously passionate marriage. Some Wednesday versions are aware of how much Gomez (Luis Guzmán) loves Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Watch Christina Ricci’s version of Wednesday as she flatly states that her brother Puberty exists because of her passion in Addams Family Values. In “Wednesday,” our title character seems slightly repelled by their intimacy. For example, she looks away when her father kisses the back of her mother’s hand as the family drives to an interview at Nevermore Academy.

Ortega’s Wednesday is also very upset by her parents’ decision to spy on her by sneaking Thing into the school; She threatens violence against the poor disembodied creature if he doesn’t do her bidding in place of the older Addams. Previous versions of Gomez and Morticia reveled in their children’s petty rebellions and supported their every defiant action, but this time they’re determined that she stays in school in a matter-of-fact way. That’s for a reason that won’t become apparent until the show hits the road, but it’s still a significant change.

This Wednesday also cares about others in a much more obvious way and even hugs one of their friends. And she also harbors something her predecessors never possessed – literary ambitions. Ortega’s Wednesday is in the midst of writing a detective novel when a real mystery shrouds her life, which differs somewhat from previous Wednesdays who had theatrical, athletic, or musical ambitions. All this shows that this Wednesday is unique.
