Just because Sidney and several of her friends survived their encounters with Ghostface doesn’t mean they didn’t survive every experience physically unscathed. Several of the main characters are shot, slashed, or stabbed by the killers before revealing that they’ve managed to survive their wounds and fight another day. These near-death experiences often come at the end of every “Scream” movie, leaving audiences wondering if Ghostface has just claimed another victim before bringing the nightmare to a decisive conclusion.
In the first two films, Dewey is stabbed multiple times by Ghostface, only to narrowly survive and be taken away by paramedics to recover. Sidney is the alleged final victim in “Scream 3” and “Scream 4”, shot in the former and stabbed in the latter only to fake the full extent of her injuries in order to get Ghostface to drop her guard. Sam is injured during her fight against the Ghostfaces in the fifth “Scream” and regains her power to finish off Richie while the film undermines expectations by killing Dewey despite his status as an old character. A notable addition to this trope is that Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettierre), who is believed to have been stabbed in Scream 4, is revealed in the fifth film to have survived and is set to return to the franchise in the future.
