There aren’t many good comments about the series on some of the Reddit threads examining the show. “I think there is a good story to tell with this setup. But the execution seemed pretty bad,” wrote u/ElGiganto in a general discussion thread. “Did Netflix lose a bet against Lifetime? Else how the heck did this thing end up on Netflix?” quipped u/datathingy, who agreed it wasn’t a bad story, but the pacing and execution were off – mirroring other complaints that the flashbacks were too frequent. In another comment, the same user noted, “With all the best in the world, I hope there isn’t a second season.”
The performance of Toni Collette as a mother was given to Laura Oliver much praise, but viewers were far less impressed with Bella Heathcote’s performance than Andy, her daughter, whose character they found less compelling. On twitter, @sofiefrog complained Andy’s fondness for bad decisions and @naijachika_ wasn’t the only one who challenged her.” On Reddit, u/MovieBuffy88 noted, “She’s such a stereotype of a 30-year-old who doesn’t know what she wants and doesn’t know how to make decisions. Because millennials are just so useless.” Meanwhile, commentators including u/Ocelet859 slammed Heathcote’s “emotional range” and others felt that having a perceived amateur posed alongside Collette only made the difference in quality between the two that much greater .
