According to Andor director Tony Gilroy, there’s actually a pretty important reason the series hasn’t made any lightsaber references yet — because the Star Wars universe is so vast, as most people we meet throughout the series know , simply none of these weapons exist. In an interview with Collider, Gilroy pointed out that Ferrix, Cassian Andor’s adopted homeworld, is particularly isolated from the rest of the galaxy and that because of this isolation, they have no idea of the existence of lightsabers.
“That was one of the first things I asked,” Tony Gilroy said when asked if Cassian and his people know lightsabers and Jedi or not. “And you know what? Most people don’t know. I don’t think anyone on Ferrix knows anything about this. I don’t think so.” Gilroy went on to clarify that when he means “most people don’t know,” he was talking about the galaxy in general, saying that the galaxy’s massive size makes it likely that knowledge of the Jedi and lightsabers is extremely limited, especially on worlds as isolated as Ferrix.
In fact, the inhabitants of Ferrix were not even aware of the Galactic Empire’s existence until the opening episode of “Andor,” in which Cassian accidentally draws the Empire’s attention to the planet while seeking sanctuary there. While we may not have seen or heard of lightsabers in Andor, it’s more than likely that Cassian will find out about it very soon – whether it’s in Season 2 of Andor or in the upcoming season finale.
