The Worst Things Leonardo DiCaprio Has Done For His Roles

Few screen couples in Hollywood history have the kind of cultural currency that Titanic’s Jack and Rose enjoy. The characters were brought to life with aching sincerity by DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, and fans have since called for the duo to once again set the screens on fire with their passion.

So audiences were excited for 2008’s “Revolutionary Road,” even if everyone involved in the film was eager for a bit of baiting and switching. Based on a brutal 1961 novel by Richard Yates, the Sam Mendes film would offer something more like The War of the Roses for viewers searching for Jack and Rose.

DiCaprio and Winslet play a couple, Frank and April, in the mid-1950s struggling with a failing marriage. Instead of playing two people who fall in love, they had to play a couple falling out, and the actors had to film very intense, emotional scenes in closed locations.

This kind of day-long filming took a toll on DiCaprio’s mental well-being. Despite working with longtime friend and colleague Winslet, the actor was happy to finally wrap up filming on Road and say goodbye.

“It was depressing doing that movie,” the actor admitted in a 2008 interview with GQ. “There was no way out [of the cramped sets while making the film]; there was nowhere to walk. The claustrophobia got pretty intense after a while.”
