The Witcher Almost Had A Game Of Thrones Coffee Cup Moment

Netflix’s The Witcher, which follows Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) as he takes on monstrous creatures and magical beings, is often compared to Game of Thrones. Given its fantasy elements, bloody battles, and complex family ties, it’s easy to see why. But the creators of The Witcher have differentiated their series after capturing something that might concern Geralt more than a striga – car headlights.

In an interview with GamesRadar, The Witcher showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich proudly shared how a potentially devastating bug was discovered. “I was in VFX a few weeks ago and someone’s sharp eyes – we were all looking for something else – and someone said, ‘Are those car headlights?’ and you said, ‘Yeah, those are car headlights,'” she mused. “There aren’t many cars in The Witcher.”

Hissrich added that because so many people watch the episode before it’s shown to fans, these bugs will theoretically be ironed out at some point. Still, on such a busy set, some things can fall through the cracks — a fact that “Game of Thrones” art director Hauke Richter pointed out (via Variety). “Things can be forgotten on set,” he said. “[The coffee cup error has been ] so disproportionately inflated [because] That hasn’t happened with ‘Thrones’ before.”

Given the publicity surrounding the stray coffee mug, it’s likely that the creators of The Witcher and similar fantasy shows are now taking extra care to rid sets of 21st-century items.
