The farewell between Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) and Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) was a heartfelt scene based on a complex relationship. Their friendship turned into a paranoid partnership after Floki killed Ragnar’s Anglo-Christian friend Athelstan (George Blagden). It was an incident Ragnar struggled with greatly, and it was only before his final trip back to England that they made their peace. Years later, it’s still a divisive part of two characters’ storylines, with fans both for and against how things went.
On the Vikings’ Reddit page, fans were either raising a cup or sharpening their axes over the scene. Still not happy with what Ragnar’s old friend had done to Athelstan, one fan said: “Floki was so well written and acted that I still loved him after he killed my favorite character,” which others agreed. u/ZombieAppropriate didn’t mince words and said, “After all these years [Floki] never had the balls to admit his mistakes and apologize to the guy he said he loved.” Meanwhile, u/TakeMetoLallybroch made it clear why that moment worked so well, saying, “Floki loved Ragnar unconditionally. He didn’t try, but he did. These two had a bond that no one could break, not even the gods, not even God. Loved them both.”
The couple were certainly two of the show’s biggest draws, but if Fimmel had had his way, “Vikings” could have told a very different story, with a very different Floki.
