Adam Sandler revealed his secret of crying on camera on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and the actor doesn’t exactly rely on the Meisner technique. Instead, Sandler credits his wife and her compendium of tear-jerking Instagram videos. “In real life, I don’t cry at all. I’m psychotic,” Sandler said. “But if I have to cry in a movie, I literally call my wife and I’m like, ‘Send me one of those Instagram photos of a car crash or something.’ I have no idea what affects me emotionally.”

Sandler primarily had to turn to the waterworks for his more dramatic roles, including his emotionally charged performances in “Drunk-Punch Love” and “Uncut Gems.” But the actor has long felt drawn to bombastic, theatrical wine scenes in his comedies. Sad videos, it seems, allow him to refine the emotion.

Other actors have shared their quick tips for crying on camera. James McAvoy admitted to using the technique used by Joey Tribbiani from Friends as a young actor, explaining in Live with Kelly and Ryan, “You put your hand in your pocket and yank out your pubic hair.”
