In an interview with TV Shows Ace, Captain Keith Colburn admits he once fell asleep at the wheel. But he makes it clear that it wasn’t like that when he was captain. “I’m proud of it, but as a greenhorn I fell asleep at the wheel…and,” he adds, “on a wheel clock.” It was the missed watch alarm, he says, that landed him in trouble with the captain. “As I was literally preparing to push the button, the main alarm went off… and the captain said, ‘One more time and I’m going to tie your hands to the steering wheel and have you get up and let you drive manually, in case you do.’ that ever happens again.”

The incident downright terrified Colburn, forcing him to become better at staying awake on long voyages at sea. “Open the window, have a coffee, get up, walk across the wheelhouse, do whatever it takes.” Now that Colburn is captain himself, the footwear is on the other foot, and Colburn is participating in the “Deadliest Catch” tradition of destroying greenhorns. “One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen was on Wild Bill’s boat. The guy was struggling to stay awake and was drooling on himself,” Colburn recalled. And then Bill shows up and there’s a little hit on the head. It was absolutely priceless.”
