During an interview with Variety, Keegan-Michael Key revealed that he was going to do a musical number as Toad and that he was the one who improvised it. “I got to do a song in ‘Super Mario Bros.’ improvising, which was an absolute blast,” Key said. “It was just for fun, the whole thing.” Key also spoke about the experience of finding the right voice for his character when he was believed to be improvising the song. “I worked on the voice with my partner and tried to find the voice through the character’s inner journey. And then with the directors [Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic]we sprinkled some things in, we postponed it,” he said.
The addition of songs to The Super Mario Bros. Movie isn’t exactly a surprising development. Recently, star Jack Black teased that his own Bowser may also have some musical numbers for the film (per Collider). It’s not yet entirely clear how much of the film will actually be musically oriented. It could easily be just a few stray songs to better appeal to a younger crowd. Either way, fans will simply have to wait for more information to be released about the upcoming film.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie hits theaters on April 7, 2023.
