The Strangest Thing Deadliest Catch’s Andy Hillstrand Ever Found In A Crab Pot

During a Dockwalk interview, Captain Andy Hillstrand was asked what the strangest thing he had ever found in a crab pot was – to which Hillstrand gave a rather surprising answer. “Scab cancer,” Hillstrand admitted. “It’s a really small crab with snake-like skin.”

The scale crab (Placetron wosnessenskii) is a species of king crab that derives its name from the scaly pattern that runs down its legs and uniquely shaped carapace (via iNaturalist). In addition, the scale crab can also be identified by its unique dull green or reddish coloring, banded legs, and relatively soft and leathery abdomen—all of which lend themselves fairly easily to the “snake-like” description used by Hillstrand.

While this odd-looking crab must certainly have been an exciting surprise for Hillstrand alongside the Alaskan king crab in its pot, it’s important to note that the scale crab is primarily found off the west coast of North America. While this particular crab species is certainly quite interesting, the fact that Hillstrand found the scale crab in its established habitat makes it seem like an odd choice for his “weirdest find ever” in Deadliest Catch.
