The Sea Beast quickly topped Netflix’s official list of the world’s top 10 films for the week of July 4-10, despite only being available for the last three days. Within those 72 hours, it was viewed by the Netflix user base for a total of 33,520,000 hours. Close behind on the list was the true crime documentary Girl in the Picture with a total viewing time of 28,380,000 hours.
“Congratulations and HUZZAHS to @JustChris and the extremely talented crew/cast of #TheSeaBeast for reaching #1 in @netflix’s Global Top Ten!” Jared Harris, voicing Captain Crow in the film, tweeted in reply to the message. “It’s a wonderful film that has so much to say and is daring too!”
The film’s success on Netflix mirrors that of other original animated films that have debuted on the platform. One of the streaming service’s other recent animated films, Back to the Outback, also broke the top 10 most-watched films on the platform upon its release on December 10, 2021, and retained a spot on the list for seven consecutive weeks. The similarly heartfelt reception of The Sea Beast again confirms that Netflix’s original animated film content is a crucial segment of the platform’s content palette.
“Our crew worked hard on this film and I’m so glad people are responding to it!” The Sea Beast director Chris Williams, who once left Disney for Netflix, wrote in one tweet about the popularity of the film. “Thanks everyone for watching!”
