On April 24, 2013, Hank Azaria started a thread on the r/IAmA subreddit introducing himself as an “actor, ‘Simpsons’ voice and supporter of Determined to Succeed”. Over 3,000 comments were made on the thread, many of them from Azaria himself. Ultimately, one of his most popular responses was in response to a question from KellyCommaRoy asking why Moe’s voice had changed so dramatically since the 1990s. (The poster included a YouTube link with an illustrative video in his comment, but the video in question is no longer available.)
Azaria praised the user’s powers of observation and confirmed that Moe’s voice had indeed changed over those more than two decades.
“[P]Partly it’s because my voice has deepened over the years as the character became more real and gained more layers and depth. [I] felt it should squeak less and sound more ‘human’,” the actor wrote, adding, “[I] Didn’t realize it was happening while it was happening, though [I] prefer the current Moe voice.”
Azaria then asked which of the Moe voices was the commentator’s favorite, to which they replied that they preferred Moe’s old cartoon voice because she associated it with her favorite episodes. This answer may have resonated with “Simpsons” fans, who feel the show has gone down in quality since the 2000s. Nonetheless, Azaria’s voice work has of course always remained top notch.
