Speaking to Decider about the final episode of The Serpent Queen and what to expect in the already-ordered Season 2, showrunner Justin Haythe explained that a key element of the narrative of the entire series is the question of power and its transformative impact on individuals contains. especially a woman in a position of power in that era. “She really ruled France,” Haythe said. “She ruled a country no woman should lead.” The series exec then went on to discuss the fact that while times were certainly turbulent in many ways and Catherine did not shrink in terms of violence, nonetheless “she ushered in an era of relativity, at least an attempt at relative peace, of tolerance and pluralism.”

While Catherine has displayed admirable qualities as the true ruler of France for an extended period of time, Haythe said he wanted the show to examine closely the toll her reckless urge to gain and maintain control was taking. “I think the open question for this show — for this season, for next season — is at what price, you know?” He further commented that he felt Catherine didn’t have an alternative path, basically the one she took, and that “the question for the future is where do you cross the line, from where do you [do what you] need to do and where you do it, because you want to. That’s my interpretation.”
