The Rings Of Power’s Eregion Explained

Read Time:1 Minute, 16 Second

Unlike most Elven kingdoms, Eregion has a very different time period on the map of Middle-earth. According to the timelines provided by Tolkien at the end of The Return of the King, the area was founded exactly 750 years ago. It lies in an area to the east of the then-thriving dwarf kingdom of Khazad-dûm. The proximity is no coincidence either.

Eregion is founded by a group of Elves called the Noldor. They are famous for their almost obsessive interest in the craft. They create all kinds of magnificent jewels, artifacts, weapons, buildings and other fascinating works of art. It should come as no surprise, then, that Eregion was founded close to the artisan dwarves of Moria – especially since the dwarves had recently discovered a new precious metal at this point. That’s right, in the second age the dwarves start mining mithril. The Addendum explains: “Later some of the Noldor went to Eregion, west of the Misty Mountains and near the west gate of Moria. This they did because they learned that mithril had been discovered in Moria.”

So a bunch of Noldor Elves hear about this wonderful new material, pack up and literally found a nation next to the only available source of Middle-earth mithril. They establish a capital called Ost-in-Edhil, meaning “Fortress of the Eldar,” and soon they are operational. They also create a treasury of sorts called the “House of the Mírdain” to house their many creations.
