In the season 9 finale, Voight’s CI Avalos kills drug lord Escano in revenge for orchestrating her brutal rape in a previous episode. Voight assures Anna that he can protect her, but she panics and shoots and injures him. Detectives Upton and Halstead arrive at the scene, shots are fired and Anna is hit and later dies while a shaken Voight looks on. And fans see implications for next season.
In the Chicago PD subreddit discussion titled “Anna and Voight,” user u/PBedtime wonders if Voight “…will or should blame Hailey and Jay?” for Anna’s death. The poster further predicts that Hank will blame both detectives for Anna’s death: “…because you could see the pain on his face when Anna died.”
Redditor u/jja 02 believes that either Voight will go into “super rage mode” and almost kill Hailey, or the writers will just move on to new storylines. Likewise, viewer nmichael2692 commented on a clip of the scene posted by After News Delight on YouTube and opined that it was bad for Upton, writing, “It’s fair to say things are going to be better for both Voight and Hailey next season On the other hand, Redditor u/MAJOR KONG disagrees, insisting that “Voight won’t blame Hailey. That’s just not the kind of man who Voight is. Voight will internalize that.”
