In an interview with Vanity Fair, Domhnall Gleeson admitted that filming this intense strangulation scene wasn’t easy and evoked some stirring feelings he didn’t even know he had.

“You have to prepare yourself to let go and not control your facial expressions or try to sell an emotion in those moments,” Gleeson said. “But I found it quite annoying. I looked back at a few of the stranglers… and I had no idea some of those sounds were coming out of me. I was really startled by some of the noises I was making. There were some really weird, animal things going on.”

Not only was Gleeson somewhat upset about his participation in this intense strangulation, but he also explained that the scene required an immense amount of work as an actor, saying that he went through several different takes to try in different ways to be Steve Carell’s to strangle figure. Gleeson said he wanted to give the director different options for the final cut. As such, he tried out several moods and performances during this climax final scene. Given the intense and disorganized emotion required for these scenes, as well as the numerous different takes Gleeson needed to get the scene just right, it’s no wonder Domhnall Gleeson had trouble capturing this to film the brutal ending of The Patient.
