In an interview with Variety, the Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things creators revealed that when they first proposed Robin’s character, but weren’t sure which direction, casting director Carmen Cuba happily came to their rescue with a solution they should go: “She’s Maya Hawke,” Kuba told the Duffer Brothers.
The Duffer Brothers explained to Variety why Maya Hawke was not only the perfect actress to play Robin, but also the perfect person to base Robin’s character on. “She’s far more interesting than any original character we could ever dream up. She’s hilarious, she’s whip smart, she’s very honest and real, and she’s just incredibly weird, her energy is a cross between a playful, excited teenager and a shriveled-up Hollywood actor who’s seen it all. She is just so uniquely Maya and we became obsessed with capturing her essence and bringing it out into the world because she felt like one in a million.
This description of Maya Hawke as a person certainly fits the Stranger Things character Robin, who is also whip smart, honest and real, incredibly weird and unique. Although friendly and kind, Robin is honest and doesn’t beat around the bush, especially when talking to friends. Her willingness to always tell the truth, coupled with her intelligence and unique mindset, makes Robin an indispensable part of Stranger Things.
