Another day, another outbreak. All of it has become very unpredictable at this time. A new Listeria outbreak has been detected in the United States which has triggered alarms all over.
Listeria infections are caused by food that is contaminated by the Listeria monocytogenes. The CDC declares that if two or more persons fall ill after eating or drinking the same food, then the disease is a foodborne outbreak.
The New Listeria Outbreak In The Us
It is happening currently in more than 26 States of the United States of America. The illness is caused by bacteria that contaminate the food we eat and the water we drink. The common symptoms of listeriosis are fever, muscle ache, vomiting, abdominal pain, and stiff neck.
Recently, the cases of listeria infections have escalated in the US due to some kinds of foul cheese being sold in the market. The FDA has warned of severe health implications after consumption of these contaminated cheeses.
The health officials said, “We have recalled all the contaminated varieties of cheese that were being sold in the market. They are Queso Fresco, Quesillo, and Ricotta. Restaurants, retailers have been restricted to sell them as the bacteria of listeria is very capable of affecting healthy individuals.” Another outbreak of a disease would cripple the country even more.
Cheese distributors across the country have been asked to recall their sold products because of them being contaminated with the listeria bacteria. Many cities have recalled their cheese purchase from the sellers. Such states are Kansas, Kentucky, New Jersey, and New York.
The first incident of Listeria infection was reported back in October 2020. But, the recent case was discovered in mid-February and the cases have been increasing all over the country.
Many sick people have been confirmed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention across many states. The most fascinating thing about listeria contaminated food is that no foul smell or taste can be detected in them but when people consume it worsening results start to show within 2 to 4 weeks. People who have consumed any contaminated food must keep a check on themselves and immediately report to the health care departments if they experience any symptoms. The symptoms can take more than a month to show all the precautions that need to be undertaken.
People who fall under the most vulnerable category are pregnant women, cancer patients etcetera who already have a very weak immune system to deal with a disease such as listeria. They need to take extra care and avoid consumption of the cheese varieties that are contaminated with the bacteria of listeria.
This new outbreak has already claimed a life in the United States of America which is not a good sign. The officials in Connecticut have confirmed the presence of the bacteria in a Hispanic variety of soft cheese which is manufactured by the company named El Abeulito. The number of actual infections may go way up but some of the cases go unreported. People don’t consider getting medical help for mild symptoms and heal without any professional treatment.
Listeria infections are quite frequent and almost every other year a new variety emerges but that does not indicate less caution and unpreparedness. The best precaution would be to avoid eating soft cheese until the situation of listeria comes under control. Experts also warn the most vulnerable group to not eat raw or less cooked sprouts because they can be breeding grounds for bacteria that cause listeriosis.
It is important for us Americans to not fall prey to another disease and keep ourselves protected from any pathogen that can threaten our lives.
