In one of the earlier courses of the evening, Chef Slowik prefaces the meal with a personal story that gives guests a better insight into his life, albeit a story that doesn’t exactly brighten the mood. Before serving his Taco Tuesday, Chef Slowik not only introduces the room to his alcoholic mother, Linda (Rebecca Coon), but also tells a story about a time when he was abused by his father and forced into violent behavior in self-defense .

It’s a story that doesn’t exactly evoke the light-hearted feel of something like “Taco Tuesday,” and takes on a darker tone that feels almost foreboding in light of what follows. It’s even more disturbing to hear how Koch Slowik tells this story with little to no emotion while his mother sits in the room in an obviously damaged state. If you were skeptical that Koch Slowik might not be as bad as he seems at the time, this disturbing family history will surely change the way you see him, making you slightly lose your appetite.
