In Downton Abbey: A New Era, Laura Haddock plays Myrna Dalgleish, a popular actress who comes to the film’s eponymous state to star in the film that Hugh Dancy’s Jack Barber plans to make there. Her appearance in A New Era marks her Downton Abbey debut, but Haddock is no stranger to working in popular and well-known franchises.
In 2014, Haddock played Meredith Quill, the mother of Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), in Guardians of the Galaxy. Haddock reprized the role in 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but she hasn’t been seen in an MCU project since (via IMDb). Despite her relatively minor presence in the MCU, Meredith von Haddock is still one of the most influential and important figures in her son’s life. In fact, her death plays a big part in Peter’s journey through the first Guardians of the Galaxy, and his love for her proves just as important in this 2017 film’s sequel.
As of now, it remains to be seen if Meredith will make a reappearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or any of Marvel’s other upcoming projects. Fortunately, Haddock made the successful transition from the MCU to the world of Downton Abbey. In an interview with Radio Times about A New Era, Haddock even spoke about how much fun it was making the Downton Abbey sequel, saying, “These guys are just being honest – without sounding too muddy – They are the best. they love each other [and] They have such great chemistry on and off set.”
In other words, it sounds like the move from Marvel to Downton Abbey was a leap Haddock was happy to take.
