In the same decade that gave birth to such acclaimed erotic thrillers as Basic Instinct and Eyes Wide Shut, Color of Night offered one of the genre’s strangest offerings. It didn’t take long for many to realize what they were getting themselves into.
A Reddit thread started by u/Sons_of_the_Desert lists some of the film’s most ridiculous scenes. At the top of that list, they note, “It features a woman brandishing a gun within the first five minutes, giving the viewer an immediate clue as to what type of movie this is going to be.” The woman in question, Michelle (Kathleen Wilhoite ), is about to be seen shooting herself in the head with the gun, but it soon turns into a much more passionate oral hug.
The scene and the film in general left audiences scratching their heads. In another Reddit thread discussing the film, u/The_Atoll commented, “The sex scene in the director’s cut is SO FUN! It’s super long and takes full breaks halfway through… Me and my best friend couldn’t believe how weird it was. Others admitted their love for the odd offering one way or another, such as u/crclOv9, who says, “This movie reigns for almost every wrong reason,” and u/lonestarr357, who similarly comments, “An absolutely guilty pleasure.”
Regardless of its status, director Richard Rush was proud of the film and even kept his award for Maxim Magazine’s “Best Sex Scene Ever Filmed” in his bathroom.
