The Last Of Us Fans Are Split On The Major Change To Tess’ Fate In The HBO Series

Fans of the video game will remember Tess as Joel’s smuggling companion (and implied lover) at the Boston QZ, accompanying Joel and Ellie on their journey to the Capitol in search of fireflies. When Tess arrives (and discovers the Boston Fireflies have been massacred), she admits she has been infected – and sacrifices herself to fight off a group of FEDRA soldiers so Joel and Ellie can escape. In the show, the Capitol is actually overrun by a horde of infected; One of them “kisses” Tess in a scene that users on Reddit called “weird” and “crappy.”

“Tess’s death sucks so much more than Holy F***ing S*** game,” wrote u/itsP0lar0id. “It felt unnecessary. It seemed more of a shock factor [than] an addition to the story,” added u/sma11koa1a. “I wish Tess had walked out with more dignity and more ‘fire’.” In fact, the scene itself sees Tess being pushed backwards against a pole while one of the infected forces its tendrils into her mouth and down her throat – far from the glow of fame she got in the game.

U/redvelvetsmoothie complained that Tess’ death was a “disappointment” and much more emotional in the video game, while u/telepek25 slammed producers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for the change, saying, “That kissing scene was… weird. Just hilarious… It didn’t fit the story, for the world it felt like a forced addition from someone desperately trying to show that he/she is ‘smart.'” Although many fans have drastically criticized this scene, differing from his Source material, others have actually praised Tess’s new destiny – saying it helps keep even die-hard fans of the game on their toes.
