A recent discussion arose from a Tumblr screengrab posted on the r/TheLastAirbender subreddit. Sometime during the Tumblr era, a user named sokkable argued that Zuko’s “Book Two” hairstyle was perfect, while vividly denouncing the other two looks. Although they noted that Book Three’s style was “overloaded fear,” other users in the screengrab passionately argued for it, and several Redditors passionately agreed.
“I liked Book 2,” u/TheoryKing04 wrote, “but Book 3 still had my heart.” u/SaiyanPrincess28 agreed, replying, “Book 3 to the end!” Though most only chimed in to echo that sentiment, a few others threw out more contenders for Zuko’s best and worst looks in the comments. “But they were all fooled,” u/G66GNeco joked, “because a different hairstyle was done.” u/thesirblondie responded by hyperlinking to Dev Patel’s “modern” look from the maligned film adaptation, while a number of other users – like u/ candyapplesauce_99 – Praising the man bun worn by Fire Lord Zuko in The Legend of Korra. “
Regardless, the Book Three mane definitely seems to be the clear favorite among this large collection of Redditors. While one could argue that the redesign was a mere by-product of the early 2000s’ obsession with timid anti-heroes with uncut hair (see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Revenge of the Sith), Zuko’s style could be seen as the pinnacle of one cosmetic evolution that reflects his character arc throughout the series.
