During their journey through town after dodging clickers and keeping a low profile, Joel’s “cargo” nearly hits a snag when they encounter a pool of water they are bypassing. While Joel and Tess see no problem, Ellie expresses concern about not being able to swim, which irks a certain flannel shirt-wearing rescuer. It turns out it’s not as deep as Ellie expected, so she waded through, a little embarrassed. It’s a hilarious moment that will most likely bring some extra laughs from the game’s fans, as Ellie’s inability to swim is a major issue in the game, at least for Joel and the player.
In the game, Ellie, who can’t swim, sees you as Joel, who has to find the nearest makeshift raft and push her around wherever dog paddling might be needed. It’s a bit tiresome in gameplay, but it does require you to overcome many of the game’s puzzle areas. This is resolved in The Last of Us Part II when a flashback reveals that Joel eventually taught her how to swim between the two games. Since we don’t know how far the series will take us, there’s a chance we’ll see that exact resolution. For now all we can do is wait and see how the show goes and we’re keeping an eye out for wooden pallets nearby.
