The Impractical Jokers Guest Star You Might Not Know Passed Away

In the Season 4 episode, “Pseudo-Sumo” (via truTV YouTube), Joe Gatto is cruelly punished by his friends. Wearing an oversized diaper and a light blue beanie that was probably pulled from Baby Huey’s closet, Gatto thinks he needs to appear in a baby commercial. Instead, he heads to a makeshift underground lair with a bloodthirsty crowd to match. As it turns out, Gatto doesn’t direct a commercial. Instead, he must face off against sumo wrestler champion Byamba. But the term “fight” is a gross exaggeration, as the fight culminates in Gatto immediately running from Byamba and then being thrown to the ground like a crumpled piece of paper. Byamba made quite an impact on the show when he reappeared in a Season 7 episode to once again terrorize Gatto, who acted as a human massage chair.

Born Ulambayar Byambajav, Byamba began competing in sumo at the age of 15. A fruitful career began for the competitor in Japanese and international pro-sumo. From 2007 to 2019, the athlete competed in 13 US Sumo Open tournaments, winning 10 heavyweight gold medals and seven openweight gold medals (via USA Sumo). Byamba was also one of the sport’s strongest international ambassadors. He has an impressive tally of TV appearances on other shows like Dude, What Would Happen?, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, and The Bachelorette, as well as numerous commercials (via IMDb). He died at the age of 35 from an unspecified protracted illness, according to his own website where fans can leave tribute messages.
