Sydney Sweeney appears as Eden Blaine in seven episodes of the second season of The Handmaid’s Tale (via IMDb). Introduced in Episode 5 of Season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale, Eden is a young girl destined to be Nick Blaine’s (Max Minghella) child bride. However, Nick’s affection for June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) affects his and Eden’s arranged marriage. Consequently, Eden falls in love with a young Warden named Isaac (Rohan Mead).
Together, Eden and Isaac attempt to escape Gilead, only to be caught and captured by the Gilead authorities. The two are immediately sentenced to death, and in Sweeney’s final appearance in The Handmaid’s Tale, Eden and Isaac are thrown into an abandoned swimming pool with weights around their waists. The two lovers eventually drown together, much to the chagrin of many of their friends and loved ones. Today, the executions of Eden and Isaac are still considered some of the most brutal deaths in The Handmaid’s Tale.
For her part, Sweeney spoke in a 2018 interview with Three If By Space about how difficult it was to leave The Handmaid’s Tale after only a few episodes. “There were a lot of tears and a lot of hugs,” said the “Euphoria” star. “There are so many great times that I will take with me. Not being able to work with these people anymore was so sad.”
Luckily for her, Sweeney has managed to follow her memorable twist in The Handmaid’s Tale with a string of even more notable television and film appearances. In fact, Sweeney’s popularity and acclaim has continued to soar in the years since she appeared on Season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale. There’s also no reason right now to think Sweeney’s star power will wane any time soon.
